What is boat insurance?
Boat insurance (‘marine insurance’) protects any type of boat from a small dinghy right up to yachts and expensive powerboats. In general terms, boat insurance is similar to car insurance in what it covers, fire, the theft of the boat and accidental damage to the boat and any equipment.
It can also include ‘third party’ cover (liabilities to third parties involved in a boat insurance claim).
Boat insurance is not compulsory, although it is, of course, strongly recommended. Some harbours/ marinas do insist on you having boat insurance (UK based) if your boat is to be moored there.
